142.) Toy Story 2, 1999, dir. by John Lasseter, Ash Brannon, and Lee Unkrich — 10/10
The first Toy Story may have been astonishing for its originality and revolutionary animation, but the sequel is, in my opinion, Pixar’s finest achievement and one of my very favorite films. The feelings of loss return, punctuated amazingly in new character Jessie’s brilliantly animated and edited backstory, and Pixar also goes the extra distance and covers some issues that I’ve always cared deeply about, including, strangely enough, the death of the Western. It’s funnier than the first, sadder than the first, and better animated than the first, and the expanded cast is part of why the Toy Story franchise is still so well-loved today.
